Members of The Association,
The sustainability of The Balboa Open has at last come into question. We cannot be certain of how many tournaments the yellow house on Balboa Street will provide for us, if any at all. The tournament will only continue for as long as the house will have us. Do not be saddened…the legacy of our great tournament will endure for the rest of our lives and its champions always remembered.
This is a time of transition for many, young and old, of The Association…
I believe we must, in earnest, begin the process of developing a new tournament, with new guidelines and grander scope. This is not an attempt to replace The Balboa Open because The Open can and will never be replaced. This is, however, the assertion that a new tournament be planned with the long term goal of becoming the premiere event of The Association. This new tournament should be properly aligned with the beliefs, goals, and lifestyles of The Association’s founders, a.k.a. Old Bulls.
The new tournament should be developed with sustainability and flexibility in mind as well as obvious potential to for epic match ups of marquee players in a fan friendly format. It is my absolute intention to set the precedent and begin a new legacy with the inaugural Summer Classic Horseshoe Championship.
The 1st Annual Summer Classic is being held just three weeks from Saturday in Granite Bay, CA. I am hosting the event along with my wife Tamara and sister Callie. Like the Balboa Open it will be a two loss elimination event. The Summer Classic, however, will begin the trend to a more family friendly tournament. Besides a horseshoe tournament the Summer Classic will be part of an all day luau style pool party featuring top tier live music. Nationally touring Ten Mile Tide is headlining the musical aspect of the event. Also, there will be onsite tournament camping so driving will not be required. The Summer Classic will be a family event and bringing your children for all/part of the day is encouraged. We are taking steps to make certain all participants of this sure to be epic all day party are mindful of community standards when having a great time.
Space in this tournament is extremely limited to only 16 teams – it is sure to reach capacity. If you are interested in participating please contact me or post a message on the board. I hope to see many of you on Saturday, July 25th.
Thank you,
Chris Mohler
